OVERSEER
NIGHTS 11 & 12

Unlike everyone else, you know exactly why you're here.

You've been hired to do a job, and it's time to carry it through. Sure, it's a bit odd to wake up with all the residents you were going to be overseeing, but it doesn't really matter. Once everyone is asleep, you have a chance to slip out. After all, the curfew doesn't apply to staff. Once you've left your assigned apartment, Judy's calm, even voice speaks up from the ceiling.

"Good evening. It's time to get to work..."

She directs you down to the first floor, through a courtroom and an eerily clean room where there's a number pad. You know the code already: 6227#316. Down you go into the operating theater, and through it to the program labs. Here, you'll find everything you may need to carry out your work from the terminal describing that work to a wide variety of tools to be used in the operating theater.

After all, none of this is unfamiliar to you. Since you woke up, you knew what you were going to be doing here. You just had to wait until the curfew was in place. The drugs that effect everyone else don't bother you, since you received your shot to resist it. Though, oddly, you know you have that resistance, but you can't quite remember when you got it...

Welcome, science team. It's time to get to work so that you can go home all the quicker.

Who: Killers and Charles Fei-Ong
When: The second night
Where: The operating theatre

[ No matter what you may have been doing, the deep sleep of the enforced curfew will eventually overtake you at 2AM. It's not clear just how much time has passed, but when you wake, you're certainly not in your room. You're in a room that you've never seen before, and the drowsiness of whatever keeps you asleep is still making you sluggish as it fades away. The only thing familiar here is that about half a landing up, you'll see an overhead door that might be familiar.

However, this might not be as important as how Judy's voice suddenly speaks up. ]

All of the arrangements have been made, and databanks are recording. You may begin, science team. You'll find your requested tool next to the subject.

[ A tool? If you look around for what that might mean, it might be obvious.

On a surgical tray right next to you, you'll see a nailbat. ]

Surprise! Now you're about to find out why the setting is so secret. :)

Which is to say for an OOC explanation to be clear, 62 is actually taking place in one of the Vaults in the Fallout universe. If you're familiar with Fallout, that's awesome, and if not, no worries! I'm here to answer any questions you might have.

So if it wasn't clear, the reason that accepting this role was contingent on you being okay with AUing your character is because... It is an AU! Your character has always lived in the Fallout universe—They were a normal person that lived somewhere in the continental United States before the Great War that ushered in a nuclear Holocaust. Your character was hired by the Vault-Tec Corporation, a company contracted by the United States government before the Great War to design and produce the vault system, a vast network of complex bomb shelters. Almost all of the Vaults are actually horrific experiments of some kind, and of course Vault 62 is no exception.

Your character would have known that their job would involve them doing morally questionable things and potentially killing people, but that's about the extent of what they would have known. They won't know the experiment itself in any detail until they read the IC files. In short, the experiment being conducted in Vault 62 is about tampering with memories and temperament. Your character believed that they were free of having their memories messed with when they accepted the job, but... Of course that wasn't true.

Like the rest of the residents of the Vault, your character was subjected to a form of the memory modification, though the scientists' + overseer's were a special case:
  • Your character will believe they were brought to the complex by a mysterious, all-powerful organization. They won't be able to remember the name of it, but they'll remember being offered whatever it would take for your character to accept an offer of employment. This can be as big or as small as you want, since the offer itself isn't actually real. Because—

  • Your character will believe that they are a "canon" character... At least at first. The canon memories that your character has were generated by Judy, and they're very convincing memories. However, the motive mechanic for the game is that when a character kills someone else, they'll regain a memory. For the rest of the game, these will be their canon memories in the memory bank, should they choose to kill someone, but for the scientists + overseer, they will be regaining one of their "true" memories, AKA their AU ones.

  • As such, this post is your "real" memory bank, where you'll be cataloging your AU and what memories your character will regain as they kill. While the rest of the game will regain their canon memories as they kill, the scientists will be gaining their AU memories instead. This isn't obvious to the rest of the game yet, but one of the main mechanics I expect to be able to catch people will center around them regaining their memories, as that's the only way to regain them. So have fun with this as your characters may start to question which sets of memories they have are the real ones. :)

  • As a part of the memory modification process, your character will now have increased aggression and lower inhibitions. Have fun murdering, basically!

  • Your character will also believe that they're the only ones that can leave the complex. This isn't quite completely true, since the wording implies that the scientists + overseer are the only ones that can leave, but in truth, it's purely numbers. It can be the four scientists + the overseer, or it could be five survivors. There's no way for the control systems to tell the difference. Your characters will likely learn this throughout the game's progress, but at the beginning, they're likely to believe that everyone else is doomed and they're the ones chosen to survive.

  • Your character will have full access to the Vault, save for the true, upper floors like the Vault door. Scientists have a special meeting room (to be revealed on the first day they meet), and will be given access to a map of the facility + a key code to enter any locked room. These rooms will gradually be opened to the rest of the game, but your character can access them at any time. However, they shouldn't do so in front of anyone else for obvious reasons. In addition, your character is not bound by the curfew restrictions, so they're able to do whatever they want at night.

  • Remember that the Fallout tie is OOC information, not IC! Your character will have no memories that this place is a Vault, of Vault-Tec, or of the fact that a nuclear holocaust occurred, or at least not until endgame when the rest of the game learns the truth. Their AU memories that they regain are going to be about their more normal life before things got crazy, and should roughly parallel their canon lives, at least so much as they can be AU'd into Fallout.

This is a post for discussion of your AUs, since your characters likely would have known each other as co-workers before the Vault, and also a place to store that information. Once you've decided on your AU, please fill out the Employee File and your Memory Bank.

And finally, just to stress it, feel free to go as in depth or as basic as you want with the AUs! Since this wasn't quite advertised as an AU game (because that would ruin the premise/twist), I'm definitely not going to be harsh in forcing people to adhere to these. Have fun with it, and if you have any questions about Fallout or need help crafting an AU, there's a handy dandy thread here for that purpose!

WELCOME

Good morning, science team. We hope that your sleep was restful, as it's time to get to work!

This program, as you know, represents a critical research opportunity. The work we do together will lead to a better future for humanity- not only in these times of uncertainty, but far into the future, whatever it holds.

Your unique backgrounds will make you a valuable assets to the science staff, and we believe that your unique personalities also give you the ability to lead and manage the general population. We've selected you for this position because we think that you, above all other residents, have the ability to do what's necessary to ensure the proper collection of data. Successfully completing the program will ensure the survival of humanity by delivering valuable data about psychological stress as well as experimental forms of judicial systems expected to arise in the future. We were all impressed by your skills and interviews, and we have faith that you'll be able to carry out the program to perfection and emerge as the leaders we all believe you to be.

Upon reading this message, Phase II of the operation has begun (see Program Instructions). Soon, you and your fellow coworkers will be stepping into your roles as facilitators of the directive chosen for your program.

We would like to thank you again for reconsidering this offer of employment, and good luck. Please remember to contact your Overseer if you have any questions or concerns about your job.

PROGRAM INSTRUCTIONS

The mission of this complex is to fully research a new technology to modify memories of its users extensively, and to determine the full extent of modification as well as any side-effects that may arise from their usage. Preliminary testing determined that users may face increased mental stress, lowered inhibitions, and other psychological problems as a result of having their memories modified.

Residents of the complex are divided into two groups:

1) You, the science team. Your Lounger's memory protocols were disabled, and as such, you should experience no side effects from being sustained by the Lounger. You may feel some weakness and grogginess for the first week, but proper hydration, meals, and exercise should have you back to normal within the week.

2) Residents. Your sector has been populated by thirty residents from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. These residents have gone through the full modification process, and as such, will not remember their previous lives. New memories are procedurally generated by the AI operating the general functions of the facility, so there is expected to be little to no overlap between residents' memories.

Preliminary results indicate that reminders of their past memories can cause a variety of side effects ranging from increased stress to seizures. As such, for the sake of not contaminating results, we would also like to remind you that you're bound by your non-disclosure agreement and may not disclose the nature of this experiment to any residents. Disclosure will result in immediate termination by a third party.

Finally, because of the classification of this experiment (TS), the experiment is also intended to only permit the survival of employees who have been granted proper clearances. Upon the start of Phase II, the complex's biosensors will activate, and the complex will be on security lockdown until the sensors indicate the correct number of participants to ensure safety, as we believe the subjects will be unstable and unable to cope with life after the facility.

PHASE II INSTRUCTIONS

With the modification portion of the experiment (Phase I) over, Phase II can now begin. Phase II's goals involve methodically applying stress to the populace as intensive form of the extent of memory modification as well as side effects that may arise. Because of the preliminary results indicating that these factors may arise under pressure, the purpose of Phase II is to apply stress testing to the modification process.

The formulated stress test takes two forms:

PHYSICAL

To assist in gathering valuable data, we would like for scientists to work together and select one resident every other day to induce stress in. We have provided a variety of tools for this function, though we leave the methods to your discretion. However, as these residents will be alerted to your presence, they must be terminated upon completion of your chosen tests. This can be included as a part of the test, or it may be a separate process depending on what you feel is the best course of action. The passing of a resident will prompt the second form of stress testing the next day.

PSYCHOLOGICAL

To explore the potential psychological effects of the modification process, stressors have been added by implementing a rudimentary judicial system. For each passing, a trial will be conducted to determine the guilty party, at which point they will be executed. However, the stressor is that no evidence or assistance will be provided for these trials. We expect residents to undergo great psychological distress when facing these complex moral decisions, and we also expect that they may eventually turn on each other in paranoia. This is expected, and this provides valuable data. In the trials, your role is simply to observe, though we recommend playing along as to not alert the populace to your presence.

Please note that by the nature of the system, you are not exempt from this process. We recommend discretion for this reason, as unfortunately our employees cannot be protected from this mandatory process.

Should you have any concerns about the experiment, please know that all residents have signed waiver form 3B-27 to consent to full cooperation with this experiment, thereby allowing this experiment to comply to the ethical guidelines of the National Science Board. They may not remember doing so, but admittance to the complex required these forms. Further concerns should be directed to your Overseer, as Human Resources is not currently available for comment.
